Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know to get the most out of Blackfish Acoustics' WAV Analyzer

WAV Analyzer currently supports uncompressed WAV files (.wav). For stereo files, only the first channel is used for analysis.

In the Analysis tab, click “Import Hydrophone Curve,” select your sensitivity file, and give it a name. The curve will be interpolated at 1 Hz and available for SPL calibration.

WAV Analyzer offers FFT, Welch, and Multitaper methods. Select your preferred method in the FFT Control Panel before clicking “Analyze Voltage.”

Click “Auto Analyze” to open a live preview popup. It steps through your file using the set FFT window and PRI, shows each pulse’s waveform/FFT, and lets you approve or discard results before logging.

In the SPL tab, select a voltage log entry and a hydrophone curve, then click “Calculate SPL.” The tool calibrates Vrms with the sensitivity curve and reports dB re 1 μPa.

Yes—both in the Logs and SPL tabs you can export your current view (active or archived) to CSV via the “Export to CSV” button.

Use the Ambient Noise tool: set your sample frequency and duration, then run. The tool computes Vrms and dominant frequency over each interval and presents both graph and table.

WAV Analyzer runs on Windows, macOS, or Linux with 8 GB RAM, and ~2 GB free disk space.
